Tittle erwarb seinen B.A. in Geschichte 1961 am Quachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia (Arkansas), 1963 seinen M.A. und 1965 seinen PhD in Soziologie in Austin (U of Texas). Nach Arbeits- und Studienaufenthalten an verschiedenen nordamerikanische Universitäten wurde er 1974 Professor für Soziologie an der Florida Atlantic University, 1988 an der Washington State University und 2000 an der North Carolina State University (Raleigh).
