| Die Rechtsmedizin schaut mit Wurzeln in der Antike auf eine lange Tradition zurück. Das erste Lehrbücher für Gerichtmedizin stammt aus dem China des 13. Jahrhunderts. In Europa gewann hingegen erst durch die Constitutio Bambergensis Criminalis von 1507 die Gerichtsmedizin an Bedeutung. Diese Gerichtsverordnung wies im Verfahren um Kindstötung oder Körperverletzung die Konsultation eines Arztes an. Auf Erlass des Kaisers Karl V wurde am 27.07.1532 auf dem Reichstag zu Regensburg das ersten Gesetzbuch des Straf- und Strafprozessrechts für das gesamte Reich verabschiedet. Es beinhaltete u.a. Regelungen zu Anhörung von Ärzten bei Totschlag, Vergiftungen und Abtreibungen. Im Jahre 1602 veröffentlichte Fortunatus Fidelis vier Bücher über die Berichte der Ärzte (De relationibus medicorum). Fidelis diskutierte darin unter anderem Arten der Verletzungen, gewaltsame Todesursachen, Simulation und Sexualdelikte.

| Das erste deutsche Lehrbuch zur Gerichtsmedizin geht auf den Stadtphysicus der Stadt Nürnberg zurück und entstand im Jahre 1668. Ende des 16. Jahrhundert veröffentlichten der Chirurg Ambroise Paré und der italienische Arzt Giovanni Battista Codronchi die Publikation Wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung forensisch – medizinischer Probleme. Dieses Scriptum bestand u.a. aus der Lehre von Wunden. Im Jahre 1790 führte Johann Bohn den Terminus „Medicina forensis“ ein.

| Der erste praktische Lehrstuhl für gerichtliche Medizin entstand im Jahre 1813 in Wien. Besetzt wurde diese Professur von Johann Josef Bent (Lehrkanzel für Staatsarzneikunde und Gerichtliche Arzneykunde). Sechs Jahre später würde durch Mathéo – José – Bonaventure die forensische Toxikologie ins Leben gerufen. 1968 wurde der Begriff Gerichtsmedizin durch den der Rechtsmedizin ersetzt.
