From 1864 to 1869, the British Parliament passed so-called Contagious Diseases Acts (CDA) which were to provoke a movement with the aim of their abolition. The first of these acts was the result of a recommendation of a committee which had been established in 1862 to inquire into venereal disease in the armed forces.
