Der an der Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam lehrende niederländische Historiker Pieter Spierenburg (*1948) befasst sich intensiv mit historischer Kriminalitätsforschung, insbesondere mit der Geschichte der Gewalt (und des Mordes) sowie des Strafens. Er ist Sekretär der International Association for the History of Crime and Criminal Justice (IAHCCJ) seit ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1978.
Er ist Mitherausgeber von Crime, Histoire & Sociétés/ Crime, History & Societies (seit 1995), Forschungsdirektor des Programms über Group Cultures (seit 2004: Group Formation and Civil Society) und bekleidete denselben Posten von 1993-2005 im Posthumus Institute (Dutch inter-university research school for socio-economic and socio-cultural history).
Er ist seit 1988 Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Komitees der Groupe Européen de Recherches sur les Normativités (GERN), Paris.
Er leitete ein Projekt über die Geschichte der sozialen Kontrolle in Europa (1997-2003). Visiting professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, March-May 2001.
Project leader (with Sophie Body-Gendrot) of an international project on interpersonal violence, historical and contemporary (2003-5).
Visiting professor, Law School, University of California at Berkeley, January-June 2006.
Co-leader (with Laurent Mucchielli) of the workpackage "The Evolution of Deviant Behavior" of FP6-project CRIMPREV, since July 2006.
