D. Garland gilt als einer der führenden Soziologen in der Theorie des Verbrechens und der Strafe. Er schloss sich 1997 der New Yorker Universität, Fakultät Jura, an. Weiterhin hat D.Garland auch einen Lehrstuhl in Soziologie. Bevor Garland nach New York wechselte, war er an der juristischen Universitätsfakultät Edinburgh beschäftigt. In den Jahren von 1984 bis 1997 pendelte er aus unterschiedlichen Gründen zwischen beiden Universitäten, z.B. als Gastprofessor. | |||
Garland wird berühmt einerseits mit seiner soziologischen Annäherung an die Studie der Strafe- und Verbrechenskontrolle und andererseits für seine Arbeit an der Geschichte über die Theroien der Kriminologie. | |||
Garland gilt als Gründungsredakteur der zwischendisziplinaren Zeitschrift "Strafe & Gesellschaft". Weiterhin ist er Autor von preisgekrönten Studien, u.a. Punishment and Modern Society | |||
Garlands wohl bekanntestes Buch ist ''Kultur der Kontrolle'' (Original: Culture of Control), in der er die Entwicklung von Kontrollkulturen in westlichen Staaten nachzeichnet. Seiner Ansicht nach zeichnet sich Kriminalpolitik zunehmend durch eine populistisch gekennzeichnete [[Punitivität]] oder [[Straflust]] aus. | |||
