David William Garland schließt 1977 sein erstes Studium erfolgreich ab. Er erwirbt den Titel Bachelor of Laws an der Universität von Edinburgh. 1978 schließt er den Master in Criminology an der Universität von Sheffield ab. 1984 promoviert D.W. Garland in "Socio-Legal Studies" an der Universität von Edinburgh. (PH.Dr.)
Heute
David William Garland ist heute an der New York University, School of Law and Department of Sociology, beschäftigt. Er hat dort folgende Lehrstühle:
