Die DNA ist aus 2 Einzelsträngen, deren Verbindung/Koppelung aus 2 verschiedenen Basenpaaren (Adenin – Thymin & Cytosin – Guanin) besteht. Das Ganze wird als Doppelhelix (in sich spiralförmig drehend) bezeichnet. Drei hintereinander liegende Basenpaare  entsprechen einen Codon (Code für eine Aminosäure) auf der DNA.
Die gesamte DNA-Länge eines menschlichen Chromosoms beträgt ca. 1 Meter. Die DNA umwickelt dabei die Proteinmoleküle zum Chromosom. Siebzig Prozent der DNA  (Basensequenz) sind einmalig und bilden so den Unterschied von Mensch zu Mensch.
Die kleinste Einheit auf der DNA ist das Gen. Die Gesamtheit der Gene nennt man   
Genom. Das menschliche Genom besteht aus 3 Milliarden DNA-Basenpaaren in 22
autosomen Chromosomen und 2 Geschlechtschromosomen.
In der DNA liegt die Information zur Synthese der für den Gesamtorganismus notwendigen Bausteine gespeichert. Daher auch die Bezeichnung genetischer Fingerabdruck. Spezielle Merkmale eines Menschen lassen sich hier ablesen z.B., ob DNA-Material eine Disposition zur Hypertonie, Diabetes mellitus, spez. Formen des Schwachsinns, Schizophrenie, Psychose, Epilepsie aufweist.
Im Bereich der Polizeiarbeit dient die DNA  zur Täterüberführung. Hinterlassene Zellstrukturen (Spuren) eines Täters am Ort des Verbrechens/ beim Verbrechensopfer werden untersucht und durch einen Vergleich eine mögliche Übereinstimmung mit dem Täter bestimmt. In der Regel wird ein Speicheltest (Mundhöhlenabstrich) für die DNA-Probe vorgenommen. Die Probe geht anonym in ein Labor und darf nur mit einer richterlichen Genehmigung entnommen werden. Dazu muss eine konkrete Straftat nach dem <nowiki>StGB</nowiki> vorliegen oder dem Zweck der Identitätsfeststellung in einem künftigen Strafverfahren dienen. 
 
Die Human-Genetik ist die Wissenschaft von der Vererbung (biol.). Sie beschreibt u.a.
die manifestierende auffällige Ähnlichkeit zwischen Eltern & Kind. Nach Mendels (1822 – 1884) Erbsenexperiment liegt der Beweis offen, dass mittels Keimzelle Faktoren vom Vater & Mutter an die Nachkommen vererbt werden.
Dominante Gene setzten sich gegenüber rezessiven (stille) Genen durch.
Im Nachkommen werden Faktoren (die stillen Gene) konserviert, nicht aber vermischt mit den dominanten Genen. In der nächsten Generation können die stillen Gene zu dominanten Genen werden oder stille Gene bleiben. Jedem Chromosom sind bestimmte Gene zugeordnet. Z.B. Chrom X sagt etwas über die Blutgruppe einer Person aus.
Die Human-Genetik untersucht(e) unterschiedlichste Umweltfaktoren, welche evtl. Auswirkungen auf Verhalten oder Zustand von Personen haben könnten. Chemische und physische Umwelteinflüsse, z.B. Strahlungen, Nahrung, Licht, Temperatur, Hormone, Krankheiten etc., können Genmutationen verursachen. Die Manipulation  äußert sich bspw. durch das Fehlen/Zufügen einer Base auf der DNA. Die Folge führt zur Veränderung des Gen-Codes für die gesamte Lebensdauer eines Menschen.
 
Klonforschung ist ein weiteres Interessensgebiet der humangenetischen Wissenschaft. Ein Zellklon beinhaltet alle Zellen, die durch Zellteilung aus einer Stammzelle hervorgegangen sind und deshalb untereinander identisch sind. Der Zellklon ist eine identische Kopie der Ausgangs-DNA. Ein praktisches Ziel der Klonierung ist die Vermehrung zu untersuchender DNA in vielen Größenordnungen. Auf Grund der DNA-Klonierung ist es möglich, erbliche Defekte in Zellen zu heilen.
