Published widely on prisons, punishment and critical criminology. Recent book titles include Critique and Dissent; Beyond Criminal Justice; The Caretakers of Punishment; and Why Prison? David is a former coordinator of the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control and is a member of the steering committee of the Reclaim Justice Network. Dr David Scott has worked at Liverpool John Moores University since August 2013. He is a qualified teacher and was awarded an MA (with distinction) in Crime, Deviance and Social Policy from Lancaster University in 1996 and a doctorate under the supervision of Professor Barbara Hudson from the University of Central Lancashire in 2006.
David has taught criminology to undergraduate and postgraduate students since 1994, working previously at Edge Hill University, Durham New College, the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and the University of Central Lancashire. He has published widely on prisons, punishment and critical criminology. Recent book titles include Controversial Issues in Prisons; Beyond Criminal Justice; Prisons and Punishment: The Essentials and Why Prison? David is currently completing a book entitled The Caretakers of Punishment: Power, Legitimacy and the Prison Officer to be published by Palgrave/ Macmillan in 2014.
He is an associate editor of Howard Journal of Criminal Justice and is a former coordinator of the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control. David is an experienced postgraduate supervisor and is happy to consider proposals from students wishing to undertake an MPhil/PhD in the areas of human rights, imprisonment or punishment.
